* The TLC Sound Machine *
* Version 1.11 *
*************************
I. USE
This program is very simple to use, it runs in either Medium or High
resolution. The main screen shows all the available options, nothing will
work until you select a sound file to load. The amount of RAM you have to
use is shown as 'Sound RAM' at the bottom of the dialog box so if you select
a sound file longer than this, the program won't allow you to load it. You
can load almost anything into the program (not just digitized sound files).
You can load any type of program but most sound pretty odd when played.
After loading a file, all the options to manipulate it are functional. If
you choose to amplify, soften, stretch or squeeze a sound, a dialog box
appears requesting the percentage. Enter a number and pres RETURN. To play
the sound, simply click on PLAY. If you want the sound continuously
repeated, turn the LOOP option on by selecting it. Looping will continue
until you press any key then the current sound will stop when the end is
reached. Saving a file gives you 3 options, you can save it in DigiSound
format, SoundOff! (ST Replay) or as a raw data file. ST Replay, MaSTerSound
and SoundOff! all share the same format of file as do DigiSound and Hippo
digitized sound files. Load a sample and play with it, you can sometimes
come up with some neat (and weird!) sounding files. For info, click on the
TLC Icon.
II. EXPLANATION
Most digitized sound files are pretty much the same. Manipulating them
takes a lot of processor time and must be done with machine language calls.
Although the program itself is written in GFA Basic, the instructions for
sound manipulations are all machine language calls. These were written by
Joe Andrews, author of the SoundOff! Sound Digitizer. For a truly powerful
sound digitizing and manipulating package, get SoundOff! from Diverse Data
Products. It allows far more options than this simple player program and
includes the hardware necessary to create your own sounds from scratch.
III. KNOWN COMPATIBILITY PROBLEMS
I only know of 1 program which effects the use of this program and that
is DC Showit by Double Click Software. The program will still function but
if you have DC Showit active and save an edited sound file, the first few
bytes are scrambled making the sound a little odd when reloaded and played.
The solution? Just don't run DC Showit before using this program to
manipulate and save sound files!
